Boy George started his South American tour last week and I was at his second stop in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is doing a 'Best of Culture Club and Boy George' tour to show people that he is a great composer and singer, after all the drug scandals he has lived through over the last few years. It was George's third visit to Argentina, and he choosed a big venue to do it, the Luna Park, which was 80 % full. A very different country-rock version of 'Karma Chameleon' started the concert. The band - John Themis on guitar, Kevan Frost on bass, Malcom Maddock on keyboards, Martin Beddle on drums, and John Gibbons and Lizzie Dean on backing vocals - sounded good and their alternative arrangments on songs like 'Church Of The Poison Mind', 'Move away', 'It's A Miracle' and 'I'll Tumble 4 Ya', were more pop-rock than in the eighties. Cover versions had their place with a Bowie classic, 'Suffragette City', Bread's 'Everything I Own' (which was also a UK number one for George), and Marc Bolan's 'Get it on'. Some of the most surprising moments came from the gospel section, with amazing versions of 'Down By The Riverside' and 'This Little Light of Mine', with George in strong voice remembering Elvis in the 70s. The ex-Culture Club singer also performed two of his best acoustic songs: 'Cheapness & Beauty' and 'Unfinished Business'; and a few new ones, notably 'Vote 4 Love' (good melody!) and his forthcoming single (and hit!) 'Yes We Can', dedicated to Barack Obama. The crowd also enjoyed the 1982's reggae 'Do you really want to hurt me' and his Hare Krishna tribute 'Bow down Mister'. But the best part of the show followed with the best of the Culture Club ballads, 'Victims' and 'Thats The Way', showcasing an excellent performance from new backing vocalist Lizzie Dean. The only track missed out of the set-list was 'Miss me blind'. It was planned as an encore, but George and the band had stage-monitor problems and didn't come back onstage after their one and a half hour show. The tour continues with a sold out concert in Chile and then he will be in Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, the UK and next year in the US. |
