CUTTING CREW |

In 1986, a classic year for great music, Cutting Crew arrived on the scene front by the oddly named Nick van Eede and sporting those mullet hairstyles that couldn't be placed in any other era. A couple of hits followed 'I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight' and 'I've Been In Love Before' and then they disappeared from the UK music scene, which was a shame. This DVD, filmed live at Knopf's Music Hall in January 1987, showcases what a great band they actually were. Sure, all the tracks follow a conventional path, but they veer off in different directions, showing just how intricate the melodies and harmonies were and how much 3 men on guitars can do when accompanied by keyboard and drums. It's worth noting that the music and vocals don't always come across as evenly and as clear-cut on this DVD as they do on the album, but then this was most likely an early live performance for them as at one point Nick says it's their first gig in Europe. The picture's also not the best, but technology has moved on significantly in the last 20 years! It's a short set, just 8 songs and 39 minutes, and mainly made up of their slower songs, including their hits, but rockier tracks 'Any Colour', 'One For The Mocking Bird' and 'Fear of Falling' do put in an appearance. Extras are few and far between on this DVD, sadly. A five-minute interview with Nick vab Eede and guitarist Kevin Scott Macmichael is the only thing included, but well done for 'chaptering' this interview. It's so annoying when you've got an hour long documentary as an extra which has no chapter points to break it up. Overall this is a good DVD, but the briefness of the set and the lack of extras perhaps doesn't make it value for money. If you're thinking of introducing yourself to Cutting Crew, buy the recent 'best of' CD instead. |
